– 【From counselor】 —————–

This is Ishihara in the consultation room.

The rush of master’s thesis and graduation thesis has been settled down, and I think it is time to enter the year’s summary toward the end of the fiscal year. How are you ?

I talked about dependence at a mental health seminar last December.

Dependency is a broad word, so we first summarize the general dependence and dependence as a disease, overview the substances that cause it and cope with it, and discussed the support we can provide to non-healthcare professionals.

Perhaps our closest “smartphone dependence” is not currently considered a disease. By the results of the questionnaire after the seminar, they pointed out that it was surprising and they not know how to deal with it.

Roughly speaking, what is positioned as dependence is limited to those that have significant health and socio-economic consequences and are difficult to improve on their own. Gambling is do not depend on substances such as alcohol and drugs.

Although smartphones certainly affect learning and work by spending a lot of time depending on how they are used, it is said that the current situation itself does not directly cause major health damage or economic loss. Seems to be the way of thinking in psychiatry.

In addition to smartphones, there are also dependencies such as parents and partners who can not live without the presence of someone, but what you can do around it is to point out that it is dependent and recommend treatment. We will be watching them to be able to get away from the things that are causing them.

The counselors office cannot provide treatment, but we can help you listen to the story and discuss the response policy together, so please use it as needed.
