September 2026】
We will periodically send out counselor comments and usage situation etc.

– 【From counselor】 —————–

I am Kazuto Ishihara, a counselor.
The season has arrived when we can sense the touch of autumn in the morning and evening breezes. I hope you are all doing well.
September is a time when the balance of mind and body can easily be disrupted, as we prepare for the new school term and navigate changes in our surroundings.

September—as summer vacation draws to a close and the resumption of university life approaches—is a time when both mind and body are prone to significant strain.
As students refocus on course registration, assignments, job hunting, and re-establishing social connections, they may experience issues such as a vague lack of motivation, lingering fatigue, or feelings of low mood.
For faculty and staff, too, this is a period when fatigue tends to accumulate due to the convergence of resuming classes, attending to students, and an increasingly heavy workload.

The week from September 10 to 16 is designated annually as “Suicide Prevention Week.” This initiative aims to foster a society where everyone recognizes the preciousness of life, notices those who are struggling, and offers them support.
There is no need to shoulder worries or anxieties alone. If you notice changes in those around you or feel unwell yourself, please do not hesitate to reach out.
For those around you, if you sense that someone seems different than usual, simply speaking to them and listening—taking that first step—can provide vital support.

Please feel free to reach out, even if you think the matter is minor. Professional counselors and staff are available to listen to you here, as well as at the campus Health Center and the Student Counseling Office.
To get through the new semester without undue stress, try to focus on getting plenty of rest and relying on those around you. We are here to support you so that you can enjoy your campus life with peace of mind.
September is a great time to check in on your mental well-being.

Counseling room report Version
July 2026】
We will periodically send out counselor comments and usage situation etc.

– 【From counselor】 —————–

I am Kazuto Ishihara, a counselor. How are you?

July has brought a succession of days with high humidity; I hope you are all doing well.
On such hot summer evenings, a chilled alcoholic drink is truly special—yet the combination of summer and alcohol can have surprising effects on your mental health.
Here are some tips on how to cope with the heat while maintaining a healthy relationship with alcohol—often called the “best of medicines.”

Alcohol has a strong diuretic effect, meaning the more you drink, the more fluids your body loses.
A drop in hydration levels makes the brain more susceptible to stress, potentially leading to irritability, anxiety, and fatigue.
When drinking alcohol, it is important to alternate with a “chaser”—consuming at least an equal amount of water.

Also, having a “nightcap” because the heat makes it hard to sleep is actually counterproductive. As alcohol is metabolized, it stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, raising your heart rate and body temperature and resulting in shallower sleep.
An unexplained drop in mood or a sense of fatigue the next morning might be caused by the reduced sleep quality resulting from alcohol consumption.
Opting for herbal tea or chilled barley tea instead of alcohol helps prevent a rise in heart rate and body temperature during the night, making it easier to achieve deep sleep.
Waking up feeling refreshed the next morning also lays the foundation for a positive mindset.

Try switching to trendy non-alcoholic beers or mocktails, or find ways to relax that don’t involve alcohol; instead of using drinking as a crutch, try self-care activities like taking a warm bath or reading a book.

In summer, hydration is essential for both body and soul. Let’s fully enjoy the season while maintaining a comfortable relationship with alcohol.

May 2026】
We will periodically send out counselor comments and usage situation etc.

– 【From counselor】 —————–

I am Kazuto Ishihara, a counselor. How are you?

The tension of the new academic year is gradually easing, and the greenery on campus is becoming more vibrant.
Golden Week has just ended; I hope you are all doing well.

During this time of year, you might feel unmotivated or sluggish, and the term “May blues” is often heard, but these kinds of ailments are by no means due to a lack of effort on your part.
Try to think of it as an important period of preparation, where your mind is working hard to take root and catch up with the rapid changes of spring.

The mind is often compared to a “garden.” In April, we sowed new seeds and touched new soil in an unfamiliar environment.
While water and nutrients are necessary for germination, what is most essential is “appropriate space.”
Just as plants become more susceptible to disease when they are too densely packed and lack airflow, our minds cannot grow healthily if they are filled without any space left by “plans” and “responsibilities.”
The discomfort you experience in May may be your mind sending a signal that it needs some thinning and better airflow.

① Consciously create time to “do nothing,”
② If you feel stuck, leave the lab and take a walk along the poplar-lined street or around Ohno Pond,
③ Give yourself some “nourishment for the soul” outside of work and research, such as listening to your favorite music or eating delicious food,
and create a path for the wind to blow through.

If you feel that you are not receiving adequate emotional support, please don’t keep it all to yourself; reach out to someone close to you or to a support service.

Counseling room report Version
March 2026】
We will periodically send out counselor comments and usage situation etc.

– 【From counselor】 —————–

I am Kazuto Ishihara, a counselor. How are you?

March is the time of year when the “fluctuations in mind and body” are most pronounced as the seasons change from winter to spring.
Increased daylight hours and exposure to light boost serotonin secretion in the brain, making it easier to feel better and more motivated.
Especially in areas with little sunlight in winter, like Sapporo, this change in light has a significant impact on mental health, and the signs of spring help to promote emotional recovery.
On the other hand, the change of seasons often disrupts the autonomic nervous system, making March a time when fatigue, drowsiness, and decreased concentration are common.
The busyness of the end of the fiscal year and environmental changes can combine to increase stress, making it a time when emotions are easily unstable.

Furthermore, from the latter half of March, hay fever and allergy symptoms begin to appear, leading not only to discomfort in the nose and eyes, but also to decreased sleep quality and fatigue.
These physical ailments can also affect mental health, sometimes causing irritability and depression.
A characteristic of March is that there are significant individual differences; some people feel down as winter fatigue surfaces, while others feel better as rising temperatures improve blood circulation and increase activity levels.

To stay healthy in March, it’s effective to regulate your body clock by getting some morning sunlight.
Incorporating habits that regulate the autonomic nervous system, such as deep breathing, stretching, and lukewarm baths, will lead to mental and physical stability.
Also, starting pollen allergy countermeasures early can prevent a decline in sleep and concentration.
It’s important to consciously set aside time for rest, without being swept away by the busyness of the end of the fiscal year.
Using the changing seasons to your advantage and slowly switching your mind and body into spring mode is key to protecting your mental health in March.

I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all of you graduating or completing your studies this year, and to those of you embarking on new careers.
I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Counseling room report Version
January 2026】
We will periodically send out counselor comments and usage situation etc.

– 【From counselor】 —————–

Happy new year. I am Kazuto Ishihara, a counselor.
Thank you for your continued support this year.

As the new year begins, you may want to refresh your mind, but
you may also find yourself lacking motivation or feeling down for
some reason.
January is actually one of the times of the year when mental health
is most vulnerable.
Fatigue from the New Year holidays can linger and disrupt your
daily routine, and the short daylight hours and cold weather can
affect your mood.
Add to that the pressure of having to work hard because it’s the
new year, and the strain of resuming work or school, and your
mind may find it difficult to keep up.

These changes are caused by the environment and the season, and
do not occur because you are weak. That’s why it’s important not to
try to make sudden changes in January.
Rather than trying to adjust your daily routine all at once, try creating
a run-up period by adjusting your wake-up time back by 15 minutes,
setting small goals, etc., which will help ease the mental burden.

Additionally, simply adjusting your lifestyle to basic habits such as
getting some morning light, eating warm meals, and doing some light
exercise can help stabilize your mood.
In particular, in areas with short daylight hours like Hokkaido,
morning light is a great help in regulating your body clock.

January can be a time when feelings of loneliness can intensify, so
consciously taking time to connect with others, such as sending a short
message to a friend or family member or chatting with a colleague, can
also help you feel more at ease.

There’s no need to blame yourself for not feeling motivated. January is
a month when people all over the world tend to feel down.
So, as you start the year off right, try telling yourself, “It’s okay to take it
slow.” Taking some time to quietly get organized will give you great
energy as you head into spring.
